Graston Technique® Q & A

What is the Graston Technique®?

Your muscles are constantly contracting and relaxing, allowing you to move freely throughout your day. Over time, they can develop adhesions or restrictions, or scar tissue can limit your range of motion. Graston Technique therapy gently massages areas of concern to release stuck points and mobilize soft tissues, such as tendons and ligaments.

What are some of the benefits of the Graston Technique?

By removing interferences, the Graston Technique improves blood and lymphatic circulation and speeds up your recovery. It’s a fast, convenient, noninvasive treatment that can reduce your pain and dependence on pain-masking medications.

What conditions can the Graston Technique address?

Dr. Ferguson may recommend this treatment for a wide range of conditions or pain, including:

  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Hip pain
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Ligament sprains
  • Muscle pain
  • Muscle strains
  • Neck pain
  • Overall muscle tightness
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Scar tissue
  • Tendinitis and tendinopathies
  • Tennis elbow
  • Trigger points

If your muscle or joint condition is related to soft tissue dysfunction, this approach may be ideal for you.

What can I expect from my Graston Technique appointment?

You’ll start with an evaluation to determine if the Graston Technique can address your symptoms. If so, wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment so Dr. Ferguson can access the areas that need help.

Dr. Ferguson uses Graston tools, stainless steel instruments in various shapes, to gently scrape the skin. He’ll typically use medium pressure and glide them over the affected area to break up restrictions. You may experience temporary discomfort as the adhesions and scar tissue release, followed by improved flexibility and a reduction in overall pain afterward.

Can my treatment plan combine Graston Technique with other treatments?

The Graston Technique can be used alone or combined with other approaches, such as physical therapy, massage, and electrical stimulation therapies. Depending on your treatment plan at Chiropractic Rehabilitation and Acupuncture, you may also stretch, perform strengthening exercises, or use a cold pack (cryotherapy) on the area.

Dr. Ferguson adapts your treatment to your specific condition, whether it’s an acute issue like a sports injury or a chronic, nagging problem.

Because the Graston Technique is so versatile, it can also be a valuable part of your preventive care plan. By keeping your soft tissues healthy, you can enjoy better athletic performance while reducing your risk of injury.
